I was just thinking about how so many people were surprised at the knowledge that R. Kelly tried to rape Aaliyah.

This tells me how much this problem is ignored and brushed aside.

Our language regarding sex is steeped in violent euphemisms that remove nearly all agency from the woman involved and frame it around literally HURTING HER.

“Imma beat that pussy up”

“She got a train ran on that ass”

“Imma bust that pussy open”

“I smashed that pussy”

“I tore that pussy up”

None of these phrases convey a healthy, mutual and consensual sexual relationship.

Not to mention the immense amount of victim blaming the Black community condones, especially with regards to rape victims.

Last report I saw, 60% of Black women are telling us they’ve been raped

We gave R. Kelly the pass when he was caught on tape raping an underage girl, with thousands of women uplifting him as a paragon.

Al Sharpton and the NAACP defended the Dunwich Village rapists.

Eddie Long has been accused of raping two men

But we got too many people, both Black men and women, claiming that there’s no problem.

No.

There is a problem

The extreme cisheteropatriarchy that we want to try and pretend has no effect on our lives is the problem.

We cannot get equality from without when we are ignoring the inequalities within.

Meaning we need to stop this bullshit “Black people don’t need feminist principles because that’s white folks poisonous stuff” mentality.

We need Black feminism and Womanism to make shit happen, y’all.
